Well iteresting topic,
for me is one of the best mashup´s i ever listenend DJ John´s Juke box hero project.
It has so much content, but all of the samples working really great together. Hands up for this masterpiece.
And at the end mashups are allways good for dancefloor joke (just to see the faces of the people :-() )

I can only tolerate most rap music when it's mashed hard against a different genre (e.g., GHP - Return of the Weather Episode).

As a contrast in styles, I absolutely love Futuro's Breathe With Me Til Dawn (Pink Floyd vs. Judie Tzuke). Now, it's not better than Flyd's Breathe, but I much prefer it to Judie Tzukie's original.

So, long answer short, yeah it can be better.

I'm bringing back an old topic here, but just wanted to say that Aggro1's "Roxanned To Death' is what immediately came to my mind. To me, 'Roxanne' was just a mediocre song while I was growing up...but I listen to "Roxanned To Death" all the time. It's my absolute favorite.

a very "empty" song can be spiced up by adding extra beats/extra vocals/etc.
so i think mashing in this case is good...

It does depend on how you view the original source songs.
For example (and an old one at that) I'm not a Christina Aguilera fan but TFLHR's "A Stroke Of Genie-ous" took a crappy pop song and made it very listenable and enjoyable to me.
Whereas the Soulwax Mash Up of "Smack My Bitch Up" and "Sexx Laws" wasn't to my liking as I am a fan of both original tracks used. Although it was mixed well it didn't improve on either.

As my old tutor used to say "It's horses for courses" as none of us like exactly the same music as we will all have differing opinions on what is good or not.

This is a great idea for debate and one that has endless answers to talk about.

A couple of years ago I saw the Orb in Bristol and they played a Mash Up of one of their own tracks, "Toxingen" with an Eminem acapella layed over the top of the tune.
Personally I thought that it didn't do their track justice, as it one of my favourite tracks of theirs, but they must have liked it enough to play it at one of their own gigs instead of the original. Makes you wonder at times :)

I think that a mashup can be better if the listener knows both/all sources. Though, this whole topic is based on the opinion of the listener, I find that unfamiliar songs aren't as "impactful" to me. Of course there are exceptions.
When it comes to a mash with ALL unfamiliar sources (to the listener), then the potential of the mash being better becomes greater. I've heard a couple mashes where I don't know the sources, but dig the tune, and when I finally look up the individual bands, the songs just don't sound right without the others.
